Sophisticated modern industrial style meets the next step in audio technology with the Jawbone Bluetooth headset.

It can be worn on either ear, and you can customize your fit by choosing from one of the included earloops and earbuds.

The Jawbone can be worn on either ear, and it comes with four earloops of varying sizes to fit your lobe. Made of solid metal with a rubber cover, they're fairly comfortable around the ear. The trick, however, is getting it on over the ear, and this is the Jawbone's biggest disappointment. Because it's so stiff, you literally have to use both hands to try to slip it on over your ear. And since we don't wear our headset constantly, we missed a few calls while performing this dance. Also, the metal frame does bend (as we found after carrying it in our pocket), which can be viewed as an annoyance or as a feature--enabling you to form-fit the frame to your ear. It also comes with five ear pads of varying shapes and sizes, and we tried one of the teardrop shaped pads to secure the Jawbone inside our earsansmetal frame--it was comfortable and worked for awhile, but isn't a solution if you're moving around a lot.

As with Steve Jobs, Behar is not a fan of protruding buttons. Thus, the Jawbone's two controls are hidden within the headset, requiring you to press either the front or back of the unit to answer calls, adjust volume, or turn on/off the noise cancellation function. While we've read some reviews that complained about these hidden controls, we had no problem in accessing them and appreciated their tactile response. The Jawbone also comes with a custom-fit recharging cable that can either plug into a PC's USB port or into the included wall jack. We enjoyed the flexibility of the USB charging, but wished the cable could have been a more standard USB mini-jack (for those times when you forget to bring the cable along).

But the true test of the Jawbone is how its "noise shield" performed. First, a little about this technology. The Jawbone has a small piece of rubbery plastic that protrudes from the bulbous microphone and sits flush against your face, and this sensor tells the Jawbone whether or not you're speaking and can remove background noise from your ongoing speech signal. It can also dynamically adjust the volume of the incoming audio from your call.

We tried the Jawbone in a number of different situations, and for the most part it worked flawlessly. Sitting at our desk with the stereo volume cranked up while playing The Chemical Brothers, our call partner was none the wiser. She didn't hear any of the music coming through, and our voice came through strong on her end. While standing on a street corner, the undulations of traffic noise never made it through to our caller, while we noticed an uptick in volume with an increase in traffic noise.

However, the Jawbone wasn't perfect, as it doesn't do a great job in windy situations. Still, for the good majority of situations you'll find yourself in--from busy airports to talk-heavy coffeehouses to traffic-laden city streets--the Jawbone should perform very well, masking the surroundings to improve fidelity for you call partner as well adapting your ear volume to the surrounding environment. We just wish the ear frame was a bit more flexible.

iPhone: The Missing ManualSneak Preview: David Pogue's Favorite iPhone Tricks

The iPhone's finger-driven interface seems natural and obvious. But when you really think about it, making it seem that way was no easy task. There are no menus in the iPhone software, for example, and no checkboxes or radio buttons. Everything on the screen has to be big enough for a fleshy fingertip.

On the other hand, the finger makes an outstanding pointing device; heck, you've been pointing with it all your life. It's much faster to scroll diagonally with a fingertip, for example, than with fussy adjustments on two different scroll bars.

Here, then, are some of the iPhone's unadvertised taps, double-taps, and other shortcuts, all culled fromiPhone: The Missing Manual.

Double-Tapping

Double-tapping is actually pretty rare on the iPhone. It's not like the Mac or Windows, where double-clicking the mouse means "open." On the iPhone, you open something withonetap.

A double tap, therefore, is reserved for three functions:

 

• In Photos, Google Maps, and Safari (the Web browser), double-tapping zooms in on whatever you tap, magnifying it by a factor of two.
• In the same programs, as well as Mail, double-tapping means, "restore to original size" after you've zoomed in. (Weirdly, in Google Maps, you use a different gesture to zoom out: taponcewithtwofingers. That gesture appears nowhere else on the iPhone.)
• When you're watching a video, double-tapping eliminates or restores letterbox bars.

 

See, the iPhone's screen is bright, vibrant, and stunningly sharp. It's not, however, the right shape for videos. Standard TV shows are squarish, not rectangular. So when you watch TV shows, you get black letterbox columns on either side of the picture.

Movies have the opposite problem. They'retoowide for the iPhone screen. So when you watch movies, you wind up with letterbox bars above and below the picture. Some people are fine with that. At least when letterbox bars are onscreen, you know you're seeing the complete composition of the scene the director intended. Other people can't stand letterbox bars. You're already watching on a pretty small screen; why sacrifice some of that precious area to black bars? That's why the iPhone gives you a choice. If you double-tap the video as it plays, you zoom in, magnifying the image so that it fills the entire screen. Part of the image is now off the screen; now you're not seeing the entire composition originally broadcast. You lose the top and bottom of TV scenes, or the left and right edges of movie scenes. If this effect winds up chopping off something important--some text on the screen, for example--restoring the original letterbox view is just another double-tap away.

Secrets of the Sensors

The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you've rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can't see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you're in sunlight and dims it in darker places.

Apple says that it experimented with having the light sensor active all the time, but it was weird to have the screen get brighter and darker all the time. So the sensor now samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once--each time you unlock the phone after waking it.

You can use that tip to your advantage. By covering up the sensor (just above the earpiece) as you unlock the phone, you force it to a low-power, dim screen-brightness setting (because the phone believes that it's in a dark room). Or by holding it up to a light as you wake it, you get full brightness. In both cases, you've saved all the taps and navigation it would have taken you to find the manual brightness slider in Settings.

Earbud Cord Switch

Without close inspection, you'd have a hard time telling the iPhone's white stereo earbuds apart from a regular iPod's--but don't get them mixed up. The iPhone's earbuds have a tiny, embedded clicker/microphone partway down the right earbud cord.

That's right, "clicker/microphone." The tiny bulge is the microphone for phone calls. But if you pinch the bulge, you'll find that it clicks.

 

• Pinch once to answer an incoming phone call. Pinch for a couple seconds to dump the call to voicemail. (You can also double-tap the Sleep/Wake switch on top of the iPhone to send the call to voicemail.)
• During music or video playback, pinch once to pause the music; pinch again to resume playback.
• During music playback, double-pinch to skip to the next song.

 

Customizing the iPod Buttons

The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning four lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

But what about Albums? Genres? Composers? They're there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.

But what if you use those lists more often than Artists or Songs? No problem: you can replace one of those starter buttons with a list of your own.

Tap More, and then tap the Edit button (upper-left corner). You arrive at the Configure screen. Here's the complete list of music-and-video sorting lists: Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

To replace one of the four starter icons, use a finger to drag an icon from the top half of the screen downward, directly onto theexistingicon you want to replace. It lights up to show the success of your drag.

When you release your finger, you'll see that the new icon has replaced the old one. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.

Keyboard Speedups

Don't bother using the Shift key to capitalize a new sentence. The iPhone does that capitalizing automatically. Don't put apostrophes in contractions, either; the iPhone will put those in for you, too.

Force Quit, Reset

The iPhone is pretty darned simple and stable, but it's still a computer. In times of troubleshooting, these tips may come in handy:

 

• Force quit a program.Press and hold the Home button for six seconds to force-quit a program that seems to be stuck.
• Reset.If the entire iPhone locks up--it can happen--press and holdboththe Home button and the Sleep/Wake switch for eight seconds. You'll see the screen go black, and then the Apple logo appears as the iPhone reboots.

McCallum's Awesome iPhone Period-Typing Shortcut

I have in my possession a nugget, a secret bit of iPhone information that's so valuable, such a headache- and time-saver, that I don't know what to do with it.

One voice in my head says, "Hoard it! Keep it a secret until your book is published! If you reveal it, it'll be all over the Net in hours, and all your competitors' books will have it, too."

But another voice says, "But this information is too good to keep quiet. Plus, you didn't discover it yourself. And besides, you're not gonna starve, either way."

Eventually, the second little voice prevailed. I'm going to share with you the solution to one of the most annoying things, if not THE most annoying thing, about typing on the iPhone:

The punctuation keys and alphabet keys appear in two different keyboard layouts.

So every time you want to type a period or a comma, it's a three-step, awkward dance: (1) Tap the ".?123" key in the lower left to summon the punctuation layout. (2) Type the period. (3) Type the ABC key in the lower left to return to the alphabet layout.

Imagine how excruciating it is to type, for example, "a P.O. Box in the U.S.A.!" That's 34 finger taps and 10 mode changes!

And therefore imagine how thrilled I was to receive an email from reader Andrew McCallum, containing a method of typing a period or a comma with only a SINGLE finger gesture.

The iPhone doesn't register most key presses until you *release* your finger. But Andrew discovered that the Shift and Punctuation keys register their taps on the *press-down* instead.

So here's what you can do, all in one motion:

1. Touch the ".?123" key, but don't lift your finger as the punctuation layout appears.

2. Slide your finger a half inch onto the period or comma key, and release.

Incredibly, the ABC layout returns automatically. You've typed a period or a comma with one finger touch instead of three. In fact, you can type ANY of the punctuation symbols the same way.

This makes a HUGE difference in the usability of the keyboard.

Type on, bro.

Personally, I wouldn't do this - too geekish for me, and if I were going to get into it, I'd go the "official route". The author made a very good point about this in the forum:

So if your interest is developing your own apps that you either aren't selling or at least won't be selling through the official store, this is fine. I thought it was well written, and although I can't follow it fully , it seems to lead you into the subject well.

I do harbor other feelings about this. While I think Apple is very smart in how they've opened this up while keeping it firmly under their control, I still think that Apple and the world would be better off it it were really open. In that respect, I applaud the author and hope that thousands of developers embrace this and force Apple to relinquish control.


iPhone Open Application Development is meant for hard core developers.
The writing style is very concise and to the point, not much BS. If you don't understand certain parts of the book, you can always Google.

I'm from Java background, but picking up Objective-C and trying out some samples in the book do not seem to be super difficult for me. I also got the toolchain built successfully by following the steps in the book, although there was one error in the LLVMOBJDIR setting but can you find the solution in iphone dev google group.

You don't need to wait for Apple's official SDK 2.0 release in order to build iphone applications. And the most important thing is: you can run your application on your iphone w/o bricking it (as comparing to what Apple's beta SDK will do to you). And it's totally FREE!

Highly recommend this book to any serious iPhone/iPod touch developers.
The samples in the book along can last for quite a long time.
I returned this book, since I bought it after Apple's iPhone SDK was released, I assumed that would be the topic of the book. This book is for the development of Jailbroken iPhones. I'm sure I would have learned quite a bit from reading this book, but I'm just more interested in using Apple's official SDK, since my iPhone is no longer Jailbroken and I don't plan on Jailbreaking again.
As a programmer who creates interactive demos for visions of the future, it is very important for me to be on the bleeding edge of mobile and multimedia technologies. Such technologies include the release of Flash player 9.0.115.0 (with HD support), Flash Lite 3.0, Flash Media Server 3 (ActionScript has been key for me in its portability), and lately the iPhone open toolchain (due to the coolness factor of the iPhone).

When it comes to the Mac platform, I've only just begun getting my hands dirty. I got my first Mac a year ago and was surprised with the ease in which I was able to get started with the toolchain from the instructions in this book. The setup was extremely easy, but the most benefit of this book comes from chapter 3, which describes UIKit, the framework which handles most of the UI elements on the iPhone. This chapter was incredibly descriptive and helped me to better visualize how my app is put together.

For a programmer who needs to be able to get things done yesterday, this book really helped me earn a lot of brownie points at work. Coupled with the helpful nature of the author (who is available via IRC), I find this book an excellent resource.
The biggest problem with this book is that it addresses programming for the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware and was written prior to the official iPhone SDK being released. As a result it is already outdated with respect to many of the frameworks and APIs that aren't available in the official 1.2/2.0 firmware release and will most likely also be outdated in terms of the open toolchain, which is already changing to adapt to the SDK. So while the book has been helpful for me in getting up to speed with iPhone development pre-SDK (I have a draft PDF from O'Reilly), it is of little to no use now given the resources Apple has already made available for free at the iPhone Dev Center.

...but that is what makes his books interesting. The problem with so many "how to" books is that they're boring as watching cheese ferment and I end up falling asleep in bed after barely reading a page. I've never had this problem with any of Andy's books, from the OSX Tiger one, the iPod one or this one. He cracks jokes which helps to keep you engaged with the material, something very few 'Dummies' or 'Complete Guide to' books do.

This book is great for showing you how to do things with the iPhone that it wasn't really intended to do. It's sort of a book on how to 'hack it' without having to actually 'hack it'.

If you don't know how to get your email or how to put music on the iPhone, this is not the guide for you. However, if you're looking at your iPhone and wondering, "hmm, what other interesting stuff can I do with this while I wait for Apple to release Applications for it", then this is the perfect book.

If you're still worried that you might not like the book's style, check out the authors website (his last name dot com) and read some of his review of tech gadgets. If you then think "OMG, I can't stand this guy" what is wrong with you? No seriously, if you find his reviews hard to follow, then this would not be the book for you.
If you're looking for an instruction manual on the basics of the iPhone, this is not your book. Look up the owner's manual on the apple website for free or read one of the many other books on iPhone basics. If you're ready to take the next step in expanding your grasp of not only the iPhone, but also the entire web, this is your book. This book was exactly what I was looking for.
As others mentioned, this book does not describe some of the basic features of the iPhone, but assumes the reader already knows most of these things. It instead delves into how you can utilize web programs and iTunes to your advantage to overcome certain limitations of the iPhone. I have already ready some chapters several times and find new information every time. Andy Ihnatko has a humorous writing style and this was a very enjoyable read. I will continue to reference this book after I have finally retired it from the reading pile.
I will definitely look forward to any future books by Mr. Ihnatko.
If you are looking for a book to show you how to use the features of the iphone, this isn't the book for you. If you already know how to use it's standard feature and you're wondering what else can I do with this wonderful toy, then this is a great book. Not everything in it will be of interest to everybody, but there's something for everybody.
I think of myself as a person who understands technology easily. I usually find innovative ways to use things on my own. In this case I learned so many ways to use the iPhone which I had never even considered. Although it was humbling to realize I had missed so much, it is great to be exposed to so many innovative uses of the iPhone. I ended up with a better appreciation for the phone and the author.
The author of this book has a way of writing that attracts the reader, and wants to keep one reading. This book is not one of those boring manuals that will put you to sleep, one will begin learning from the first chapter, and what is read will always be remembered, cause you will have fun playing around on your iPhone while reading. This book is a must have for any iPhone owner, as it goes beyond the basics, and actually teaches you things you would not learn without reading this work, or by hanging out with someone that has read it.

This is a good phone. The only thing I have noticed is that the signal has to be pretty strong or the phone won't connect. I wish you could IM with the phone since it is Skype.
It probably only took me 10 minutes before I was making Skype, Skype-in, and Skype out calls. Network recognition and setup couldn't have been simpler. I'm guessing that Skype design has a lot to do with simplicity of this so I won't give all the credit to Linksys (I've checked other manuals and the all have pretty much the same features and menus). The only downside is that this phone doesn't have a charging base.
There are not many options if you are looking for Skype phone out there. So among them this is a great option.

Pros:
- Great sound quality ... no delay
- Compatible with WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PS, TKIP, AES
- connects like a charm

Cons:
- very poor battery time
- no text messaging
- menu navigation/operation slows down if not rebooted for couple of days
- Takes long time to reboot

I will definitely wait for second or third generation of Wifi Skype phones.
Nice simple packaging. Limited printed instructions on how to operate the phone but the accompanyiong CD has all that is needed if you wish to ptint out the 80 odd page user'e manual. I charged the phone for the required 16 hours or so and it was then easy to use but I didcovered that there were no simple instuctions about how to turn Skype off and by not turning it off over night I discovered the battery flat the next day. It took me a while to realise what the problem was when trying to use the phone while the battery was flat. Once plugged into a power socket is was soon up and running.
I have not had any oportunity to use the phone in many free unlocked Wi Fi locations as yet so I cannot really provide comments on the value of the phone outside my own household wi fi signal

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! It needs about three more years of development before it's suitable as a consumer device (and that's as of today).

Good luck connecting it to WEP, and if the network is a network that doesn't broadcast it's SSID, forget it. You'll connect the first time, then after that, you have to reset the phone just to get it to connect to ANYTHING again.

The only network I satisfactorily connected to was my home WPA network. The sound is okay, but I couldn't use the phone anywhere other than home, which pretty much made it useless. The clock is just as bad (or worse) than everyone else says. You still have to reset it every time the phone gets turned off and back on (and, yes, I have the most recent firmware update), and sometimes it will just randomly spring forward or backward an hour (for no apparent reason). I went to bed the other night with my phone displaying the right time, only to wake up with my phone displaying a time four hours off!

I just returned this phone for a full refund. I would recommend you not bother.

I just bought this phone and it's pretty cool. It wasn't exactly as great as I thought it would be, mostly because I was directly comparing it to the Apple iPhone. The P168's new "slide-to-unlock" function is just like the iPhone, but it isn't exactly smooth... and doesn't unlock unless you press the button in the perfect spot. The stylus that comes with the phone is extremely useful and makes the phone much easier to operate.

Putting the battery and sim card in was very stressful. The back of the phone is extremely difficult to remove and it seems like you might break the phone just trying to get it off. Also, the stylus is pretty difficult to get out.

The overall feel of the phone is decent... definitely not as nice as the iPhone, but the price reflects that.

For under $200, I'd say it's worth it, because if it's not all that you wanted, it isn't much of a hit in your bank account.

Sad to say, the i phone clone did not live up to my expectations. Sure, its cheaper, but that's it. You open the package and you get all warm and fuzzy inside, excited about the new phone. After that, it all goes down hill.

Figuring out how to open it to put in the battery was hell, i actually had to google it to find out, and even then u still have to apply way to much force to open.

Ok, so you get it open, you charge up, your ready for action. Plug in the cheap head set only to realise it don't work. Ok, no probs. You're going to buy a new blue tooth head set anyways rite. So you're feeling like loading some music and pics on there, because the phone is loud, i'll give em that, so you wanna listen to some tunes. Plug in the USB cable, now the phone says, head set connected ???? What the hell, i though someone was playing a prank on me, i swear (no i actually did, alot).

After this, i'm trying to text me big sis so she can help me vent my frustration, the pen don't wanna come out. You have to really yank on it. I guess it does no harm to the phone, and at this point you're ready to toss the damn thing anyway, so thats how you end up giving it a good pull.

For some reason the phone also don't communicate with most other blue tooth devices. Not the lap top, not the blue tooth adapter (both work very well) not the Jabra head set (that don't seem to be working at all, next review i'm gonna do).

So in the end, all it turns out to be is, a regular old phone, that u can use to make regular old calls, and take regular old pics and vid with. Not what i paid cheap money for. If it were cheaper, maybe i wouldn't be to pissed.

Buy it at your own risk, i hope you have more luck with it than i did.
I just got my phone little over 2 weeks ago, and I have had no trouble with it what so ever. I have At&t and put my sim it and it works just fine. You need to shop around and try finding the new version p168, or slide to unlock p168. It still has a crap manual but it has updated system with sim cards, and phone networks. Just ask the seller what the phone does or look for the Cect a380i that is one of the newest ones. I hurd a rumor that the quad band is fake and that it just a thing to get old phone sold. If they have the new version with slide to unlock get this phone. I already got people buggin me where to get one. I will say this one bad thing about it thoe the text messageing will get to you after a while cause the buttons are so small.
Get this phone you will like it.
There is a lot of confusion with these -- they say they are tri-band but with "support for 850" -- kind of making it a quad band. I could not get mine to register with the AT&T network (I have bought several other unlocked phones and all worked as soon as AT&T SIM was put in). I am not convinced the 850 freq. really is supported.

The phone comes with no quick start guide and a very bad manual. It is difficult to figure out how to open the battery compartment -- I found a you-tube video demoing it -- but must admit it was EXTREMELY difficult to get the battery/SIM compartment open -- you need to press down VERY hard -- I was afraid I would break the screen doing this.

Some very cool features on this phone, but the overall feel of the phone seemed cheap and not very well made. The center scroll function did not work well -- left, right, down worked but up worked only some times.

I returned mine for a refund -- not a fan.

I got this phone a lil while back and it was a great phone for the price. Love the touch screen!!! It has 6 speakers on it so it gets really loud. The menu takes a little bit getting used to but i like it. You can record and watch videos. I have tons of family guy episodes on mine. Its a great phone but it def isnt the iphone. So if thats what your looking for dont get this. But if you just looking for a good smart phone with touch screen but dont wanna come way outta pocket. This phone is def a good buy.

My this iphone sure mas inside this product, besides the comfortable thing that is to take it to any part(report).
One sees brilliant(genial) with chance clothes and calls the attention where you want that you go
I got this to protect my new iPhone. It will do that--no questions asked. It isn't water proof, but I wouldn't feel bad if I dropped it now. In fact, you could probably kick it and have it come out ok.

The one bad thing--and the only bad thing--is the screen protector. If you watch the YouTube video on installation, they tell you to rub your had across the screen and then install the iPhone. (This, in theory, gets a thin layer of skin grease between the plastic and the screen.) I've installed and installed and installed. I always get the oil slick look--a place where the plastic sticks to the screen. It isn't very visible when the phone is on, but makes it look pretty goofy when the phone is off. I may take the previous reviewer's idea and cut out the screen protector and get a stick on protector to go under it.

Bottom line: Protection, YOU BETCHA. Useable? YOU BETCHA. Easy, clean install? Not so much.

Your mileage may vary. . . .
Cons:

1) The plastic screen has a few noticeable "bubbles" (like a bad tinting job on a car window). Especially on white backgrounds you will notice it.
2) It make the phone larger all around so it probably does not attach well to some third party iphone docking stations/accessories.
3) It doesn't allow access to the silence ringer switch. However, there is a workaround - when you turn the ringer to the lowest volume, it silences the ringer.
4) Pictures aren't as clear - the plastic that protects the camera also obscures it a little.
5) The black case attracts dust in my pocket. However, the phone without a case would do the same.

Pros:
1) It is protected better from drops and accidental water. I've dropped my iPhone twice and it didn't even make a sound when it hit the floor. The rubber around the defense case seemed to absorb the impact well.
2) It is still fits comfortably in my pocket.
3) It gives me peace of mind that I will not accidentally damage my iPhone with drops or kids getting water on it.
4) The touch screen is still very sensitive and works well with touch.
5) It is a nice case that makes my iPhone seem more like a PDA, which I like.

I am very happy with my purchase of the OtterBox Defender Case Black for the iPhone. I'm glad I didn't have to pay full price also on Amazon.com. I would buy it again if I ever bought another iPhone.

This is a very neat case EXCEPT it has a fatal flaw. The case produces an "oil slick" between the iphone screen and the case's screen protector. Otter addresses this problem by suggesting you rub your hand or face against the iphone screen before inserting it into the Defender case, however NOTHING I was able to do eliminated the "oil slick" look. I tried it squeaky clean, slightly oily and very greasy and yet the screen anomaly remained. I like the protection this case provides but I didn't buy a $500 phone so I could have blurry visuals. Avoid this particular Otter product.

I got this item to hold both my bifocals and reading glasses. I would recommend carefully wrapping glasses (when this holds more than one) to prevent scratching.
I bought this case for my sunglasses because they are fairly large and I was having trouble finding a case to fit. I measured my sunglasses and checked the measurements of this case. My sunglasses barely fit in the case. In fact, I have to squeeze them a little. My friend's aviator sunglasses would not come close to fitting in it. It is a nice case, but be careful if you have very large sunglasses. This case is not as large as everyone has been saying it is.
I ordered this case before going on vacation and I find that I use it in "real life" as well. It's hard sides protects my glasses really well and the clip gives me the freedom and flexibility to take it with me. I can attach it to my belt loop or the bag I carry with me. It is big enough to fit large glasses.
